FD 27 Direct Your Football Club How to Play FD 27 as Owner
You hire the coach. You do not become the coach.
Most football games train you to shout. FD 27: Direct Your Football Club trains you to hire the person who shouts, then sit down and watch whether that hire was intelligent. If you came from Football Manager looking for a shape, a press trigger, or a half-time rant, you will bounce off the interface for an hour. This page is the mental model so you stop searching for a panel that Syra Games deliberately removed.
Read Getting Started for the first screens. This article is about what you are actually responsible for after the intro fades.
The job, stated without romance
You are the owner, the CEO, the person who decides direction from the ground up. You do not pick line-ups. You do not draw passing lanes. You decide who does those things, what they get paid, which players they are allowed to chase, which sponsor sits on the shirt, and which building goes up first. If the team wins, your recruitment was coherent. If the team loses in April with a treatment room that never empties, your August medical hire was the match.
That is not a metaphor. The match engine accounts for individual quality, form, accumulated fatigue, morale, current injuries and the tactical capacity of the coaching staff. Substitutions respect three windows. The staff AI decides from context: losing, exhausted player, result to protect. Repeatedly stupid changes are a coach verdict, not a missing shout button. Match day is how you read that verdict.
Four departments are the tactics screen
A club is a company with sporting direction, medical, marketing and finance. Each seat has attributes, performance and a salary. The four departments page is the map. How to hire staff and the staff hire order exist because you cannot staff all four at once on a League One budget.
Medical determines how quickly players return and how many single-day knocks become a revolving door. Sporting direction opens the transfer options you see. Marketing changes which brands will talk to you. Finance keeps the books from lying. Skimp on medical in August and you will not feel clever until February, when the fixture list is dense and the bench is a full-back at nine.
Money, buildings, and the calendar
Revenue is television, ticketing, merchandising and sponsorship. Costs are wages, transfers, infrastructure and personnel. How to manage finances and how to get sponsors are not optional side quests. Shirt, sleeve, shorts and stadium are four contracts. Undersell the shirt early and you lock a cheap number while reputation is still climbing.
Eight facilities exist. Training ground and medical department feed Saturday. Museum and store flatter the board. Youth coaches do not even appear until the academy building exists. See the facilities guide.
You can simulate days on the calendar and run matches at normal, x2 or x4. That is the intended pace, not a cheat. The game does not reward watching every minute if you already did the office work.
Vision, assembly, and the first save
Club vision sets playing style, transfer policy, academy commitment and financial profile. Ignore it and every window becomes a random shopping trip. The league assembly lets you vote on laws; fines now forecast in the yearly balance so June is not a jump scare. Ticket prices are the attendance lever that fights that vision if you write one sentence and charge another.
Pick the chair with how to pick a club. Play the calendar with the first season walkthrough. When a window opens, how to negotiate transfers covers incoming counter-offers and the superstar wage trap.
You are not worse at football games because you cannot set a 4-3-3. You are playing a different position. Once that clicks, the menus stop feeling empty and start feeling like a board pack.
If the Early Access v0.1 map feels small, that is honest: two countries, six divisions. The roadmap is the answer for European nights. The systems in the office are already the product.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for the boardroom questions owners actually search.
Can I pick the formation?
No. The coach does. If the Best XI looks broken after a release, that was a patched bug. Judge the coach over weeks, not one substitution.
What should I do on match day?
Watch fatigue, morale and injuries as a report on staff you already hired. Details in match day.
Is this easier than Football Manager?
You do fewer things. Each thing weighs more. It is a different job, not a baby FM.
Where are keyboard shortcuts?
On the controls page, with hover tables, sim speeds and save slots.
